making teaching learning
The CILTa is a 5 or 6 week, externally moderated modular programme which allows new teachers to take the complete course in one unit or to divide it into 2 parts over an agreed time period. Both options have a preparatory online component and both comprise a minimum of 10 hours of observed and assessed Teaching Practice.
Apart from input on expected topics such as Classroom Crafts, Language Awareness, Approach and Methodology, Second Language Acquisition, Teaching Pronunciation, Technology in Language Learning and Materials Design and Use, the course offers training in reflection, observation and feedback of self and others and much more.
Participants also have 5 assignments to complete during the course but unlike other courses, these are not onerous quasi-academic writing tasks, all the tasks undertaken during the course are ‘teacher-like’ in the sense that they all comprise skills a teacher can be expected to master and use.
The CILTa is new but it aims to make a name for quality and efficiency; it’s not a ‘pay and pass’ course, it’s a serious preparation for a challenging and important career.
To apply, you must be at least 18, be able to show some previous study history and have proven English language skills.
